It all started with me checking out the winners of the Golden Globe Awards and discovering that Madonna has won Best Original Song for her new song Masterpiece, a song that I did not even know existed.
I was not quite enchanted by the song on the first few listens but I was glad it brought back Madonna in ballad mode, which reminded listeners that she actually had a lovely singing voice (while Britney Spears does not and she really should refrain from doing any more mid-tempo ballads such as Criminal).
Through Masterpiece, I revisited Madonna's impressive discography and less respectable filmography on Wikipedia and found a glorious spot where they once converged - Evita.
Released in 1997, the movie gave Madonna her only Best Actress award to date. I remembered dozing off in the cinema while watching the movie (not because the movie was bad but because I was tired that day). I did not have much recollection of the movie, but the song You Must Love Me, which was also the Best Original Song at the Oscars that year, remained one of my all-time favourites from Madonna.
The song was written exclusively for the movie and was featured towards the end where Eva Peron has fallen sick and is pleading for her husband's love. It is heartbreaking and elegant, and watching the scene from the movie never fails to bring tears to my eye. Accompanied by only a cello and a piano, Madonna gave one of her strongest vocal performances ever.
I can't wait to hear what she is going to deliver in her new album M.D.N.A, scheduled to be released next month.
