The One That Got Away and The Album That Wont Go Away

6th top 10 single? Really? The last person who has achieved this feat was Janet Jackson with the Janet album from 1994. In fact, Janet's Rhythm Nation 1814 album did better and scored 7 top 10 hits in 1989/1990, but during those days people are still buying music in the form of CDs and the only way to hear new music is to listen to the radio. But 6 top 10 singles from one album in 2010/2011? That is certainly quite an achievement!

I will always remember Katy as the singer who craftily broke into the scene with attention-grabbing titles like 'You're So Gay' and 'I Kiss A Girl', pretending that she is the American version of Lilly Allen. But as time goes by, her music became more and more conventional and generic, and she became nothing more than a marketing face of a pop music factory. Her songs tend to contain lines of repeating melodies without much variations (e.g. The first 3 lines of Teenage Dreams have the exact same melody.) and the lyrics are not particularly deep as well.

I guess what makes her songs tick is that they remain accessible and she sings about topics that people can relate to, like puppy love and cool parties. It helps that the accompanying music videos are tastefully directed and often fun to watch. The One That Got Away is not that exciting by itself, but the poignant music video which features Katy in old age makeup, accentuated the songs messages on lost love and I ended up liking the song a little more after watching the video.

Even though Katy will never be in the same league as Janet Jackson, she has shown that she is smart, funny and she knows the type of music she should do to keep her fans glued. Looks like she will be sticking around for awhile.
