我愿意 and Remembering the 90s

I still vividly recall the very first time I heard the song 我愿意. It was a charity show on Channel 8 and Faye Wong was one of the performing artistes. I was probably in Secondary 1/2 then and during those days, charity shows still featured dangerous stunts and elaborate dance items involving many many people.

When Faye Wong, still in her awkward 王靖雯 phase, took the stage, it was just her and a microphone on a stand. She had this neatly cropped short hair looking like an army boy and she just stood there, clutched the microphone and sang (most likely live).

I sat there, about 2 meters from the TV. Having just transited out of childhood, I probably did not fully comprehend the meaning of the song, but I recalled being touched by the performance/song and tearing a little inside. I told myself when i grew up, I would want a love story just like that and I could sing this song to a special someone.

Of course Faye Wong subsequently became a music superstar for most of the 90s, and 我愿意 was the star-making song that established her status. The album 天空, while still accessible to the masses, showcased less commercialised songs that set her apart from the rest and gave the audience an idea of what was to come.

The song also aged very well. While 吻别, 泪海, 值得 and 心痛 sounded like they belonged to another era, 我愿意 had a timeless quality and would still have been a big hit if released today.
