Jason Mraz is finally back! He is one of those singers whose talent I greatly admire, but not every song I know how to appreciate. The type of Jason Mraz songs I generally falls into 2 categories:
1. The fast songs where he does this singing rapping thing, such as Geek In The Pink, The Dynamo of Volition and Wordplay
2. The slower numbers where he reveals his vulnerabilities and sings like he is standing right next to me, such as Beautiful Mess, Life Is Wonderful and his most recognizable hit I'm Yours
Unfortunately the new single The World As I See It, which will be used as a theme song for a Intel/ASUS campaign, belongs to neither of the 2 categories. As much as I want to like it, I find the song rather dull and unexciting, especially for a new single after a long period of absence. If I had not recognised that this is by Jason Mraz, the song will not have lasted 1 minute in my iPod.
My main issues with the song are the melody and arrangement. The melody sounds tiring and dated and the arrangement feels like there are a lot of things going on, distracting the listener from Jason's heartfelt delivery. This song also has one of the worst 30-second intro that induces yawning. His live version where he sings with only an acoustic guitar, is actually more effective, but still not one of his strongest efforts.
I hope the rest of the album, scheduled to be released in early 2012, will be better than this.
