I am glad to read that Someone Like You is the number 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 this weekend.
Pop music is all about what is hip at the moment and in recent years, the rap/hip-hop and electro-pop songs have ruled the charts. I checked the chart history and found that prior to Someone Like You, the last adult contemporary song to reach no. 1 was Take A Bow (Rihanna) in 2008, and the last ballad to reach no. 1 was Hey There Delilah (Plain White T's) in 2007. Almost every other song that went to no. 1 had thumping beats, non consequential lyrics, used Autotune to distort the vocals, and appealed mainly to the clubbing crowd.
In a music market like this, artistes like Bruno Mars and Adele come across like breaths of fresh air. They write their own songs and use their big voices to tell the stories.
Until this song, Adele never appear on my radar even though her debut album 19 was a moderate success and Rolling In The Deep was everywhere. Someone Like You sings to every person that has once had failed relationships, including myself. The line that clicked with me most is definitely "Sometimes it lasts in love and sometimes it hurts instead". Delivered by Adele with vulnerability and sadness, it's impossible not to be touched by this beautiful song.
Hopefully this is a sign that the electro-pop dance music wave is coming to an end and that people are focusing on the voices again.
