American Idol Season 11 - The Top 10

Another year, and another season of American Idol. 10 seasons on and the trend is quite obvious. Except for a blessed few like Adam Lambert, Daughtry and Carrie Underwood, the fame gained from being in the competition is short-lived and most of them will just fade into obscurity at the end of the season. It is nice to hear them belt their hearts out or interpret well-known songs in their own way, but no one wants to hear them sing original material.

Still AI is compelling TV entertainment and the occasional over-singing and trying-too-hard aside, there are some great musical performances and thoughtful song choices. Here is my brief rundown of the top 10 this year. From left to right:

Philip: I do not get his appeal. He is likeable in the looks department but none of his performances has stood out so far.

Elise: She does have a unique raspy voice that stands out amongst the girls, but uniqueness means she is limited in the type and variety of songs she can sing, as illustrated by her painful rendition of I'm Your Baby Tonight last week. From the way she gets sent to the bottom 3 for 2 weeks in a row, she is unlikely to go far in this competition.

De Andre: Another competent singer with unremarkable personality and forgettable performances. Will exit into oblivion once the season ends.

Hollie: My prediction for winner this year. She sounds like Celine Dion and looks like Carrie Underwood. There is a wholesome all-American likeability about her. She has only done ballads (Reflections, All The Man That I Need, The Power of Love) so far in the live shows. If she picks her songs wisely in the future weeks, steering away from the genre but still showcasing her beautiful voice, she may just win this competition.

Colton: My prediction for final 2. He is the heart throb of the competition and exudes a truck load of personality in his performances, which are consistently good. He is quite likely to be signed as a recording artiste, regardless of the outcome of the competition.

Skylar: After a rousing Stay With Me in week one, her performance seems to dip week after week. If she does not bring anything fresh to the competition soon, she will be heading for the exit soon. Still, she has the chops to be a country music star, and I will not be surprised if she achieve reasonable success in that genre.

Hee Jun: I find him really odd. In interviews, he is the joker with the witty one-liners. In performances, he is the sappy balladeer who delivers the song standing at a single spot with a serious expression on his face. It is quite sad to be an AI contestant and the audience is more interested to hear you talk than watch you sing. He can consider the career of a standup comedian when this ends.

Jessica: I really did not get the fuss about her pitch-perfect I Will Always Love You from last week. It just sounds like Whitney Houston Karaoke to me. I mean she is a very good singer but there is nothing that sets her apart from the other very good singers in previous seasons. Her horrendous Turn The Beat Around also shows her lack of versatility and inability to pick the correct songs. My guess is that she will probably get to the last few episodes and then her Asian heritage will to play to her disadvantage.

Joshua: Another example of the typical singer who has a great voice and gives impressive performances, but is likely not to go anywhere after the competition ends. Can you visualise him on the Billboard Hot 100 with his own songs? I cannot.

Erika: I kind of like her presence and her voice.  but looking at how frequent she has been sent to the bottom 3, she is not going to go very far in this competition, unless she delivers a showstopping performance next week.

Song of The Day: Tent in your pants

What a raunchy and catchy song. Like!

The tent so big x4

if there's a housing crisis in the n anymore
need a place to go, you gotta open the door
wanna save the night, pull up a floor
wanna feel alright, party galore

stop the pole dancing, sliding up and down
get to romancing, down, down to the ground

Chorus

you lick the pole when it's cold and your tongue'll stick
so keep the party pumpin' and thumpin' and shit
rubbin' the club, legs in between
lovin' the scrub, keepin' it clean
we're gonna wash that pole
we're gonna wash that pole
we're gonna wash that pole
scrub that pole, wash that pole

Chorus

Obscurities: All This Time - Joe Jonas

This is the column where I share obscure songs that I like a lot. By obscure I mean songs not released as a single and people are very unlikely to discover unless they are fans of the singer.

This song All This Time is so obscure that I am not able to locate a Youtube video of the studio version of the song in its entirety (I enclosed a live version in this post). It is track number 1 in the debut solo album Fastlife from Joe Jonas, who broke into the scene as a third of the Jonas Brothers. The song is produced by one of my favourite producers Danja, who is responsible for reviving the careers of Britney Spear and Nelly Furtado. I stumbled onto the song after reading a glowing review of the album, where he has been compared to Justin Timberlake.

When I preview an album, the first song in an album is always very important. It establishes the tone of the album and more often than not, if the 60 second clip of the first song does not capture my attention, it is unlikely that I will continue to preview the rest of the album.

I felt All This Time was a fantastic 1st track that provided an adequate introduction to the new Joe Jonas, who needed songs that clearly distinguished himself from the power pop music he made during his Jonas Brothers days. The production is sleek, sophisticated  and the beats are addictive. The song brings out a more mature/sexy side of him and even allows him to showcase his singing abilities. I thought this is a stronger track than the single Just In Love, which is quite nice as well.

Children - V. V. Brown

Apologies for not posting anything for a long time. I was busy with work and went for a short vacation to BKK, but the truth is there has not been anything in the music world that have inspired me to write - no songs that got me super excited and no songs that made me cringe like mad, though the excruciating music video of Waiting Outside The Lines by Greyson Chance came pretty close.

V.V. Brown was an artiste I championed since I discovered her 2 years ago, and she is back with a brand new single. Children samples a famous children ditty and it has been awhile since a song put a wide smile on my face like this one. Hope the new album Lollipops and Politics, due in summer, will turn her into a household name.

Doughnut - Parenthetical Girls

I found this after going through lists of Best Music Videos of 2011. A great video for me is one with a simple concept and thoughtful execution. This one is very creatively done I thought. Apparently this is not even the official music video for the song, which is pretty cute too. Like!
